Lisa Callahan, MD

About

Lisa Callahan served as Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President of Player Care at Madison Square Garden Sports from 2004 to 2023, where she oversaw the care of the Knicks (NBA), Rangers (NHL), NY Liberty (WNBA), Westchester Knicks (NBA D‑League), and Hartford Wolf Pack (AHL). The first female head team physician in the NBA, she served two terms as President of the NBA Team Physicians Association and was the first woman named NBA Team Physician of the Year (2014). She was a team physician for USA Basketball from 2014 to 2021 and was honored to work with both the men’s and women’s gold‑medal‑winning teams at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

Dr. Callahan co‑founded the Women’s Sports Medicine Center (WSMC) at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York City in 1997, the first center of its kind in the United States. She served as the WSMC’s Medical Director for 25 years, guiding the multidisciplinary center’s growth to more than 25 clinicians dedicated to treating female athletes of all ages and abilities. She was an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College, where her academic interests included stress fractures and bone health. Dr. Callahan was an active member of the HSS medical staff from 1994 to 2023. In 2023, she transitioned from actively treating patients into an advisory, mentoring, and educational role for the WSMC and Primary Sports Medicine Service.

Dr. Callahan is also a familiar face in the media. Her television work included hosting a health show on the Food Network, co‑hosting a women’s health show on Lifetime, and serving as a medical contributor for Discovery and ABC’s Good Morning America. She authored The Fitness Factor: Every Woman’s Key to a Lifetime of Health and Well‑Being (Lyons Press, 2002) and was a contributor and columnist for SELF and Women’s Sports and Fitness magazines.

A North Carolina native, Dr. Callahan graduated magna cum laude in Biochemistry from East Carolina University (1983) and from East Carolina University School of Medicine (1987). She completed residency in Family Medicine and a fellowship in Sports Medicine at the Stanford University Family Medicine Program in San Jose, California. She and her husband, Mark, live in Florida and New York.
